What changes the price
- How much of the truck you fill. Most crews quote by volume, in the sizes above. A single sofa or mattress is usually priced on its own, and many crews charge a minimum fee for small jobs. The Los Angeles, Nashville and Austin guides list both.
- Curbside or carried out. Leaving items at the curb costs less than having the crew carry them out. The San Diego and San Francisco guides list haulers that publish a separate curbside price.
- Stairs, parking and building rules. Walk-ups add a stair-carry fee in the San Francisco, Brooklyn and Miami guides. In New York City, doorman buildings that ask for a certificate of insurance can cost extra. Downtown jobs in Nashville, Austin and San Antonio land at the higher end, because access and parking are tight.
- Heavy material. Concrete, brick and roofing weigh more than furniture that takes the same truck space, so haulers add a surcharge. The Miami, Houston and Los Angeles guides mention it.
- What the dump charges. Haulers pay a tipping fee to unload at a landfill or transfer station, and it ends up in your price. The Los Angeles and New York City guides name those fees as a reason prices there run high. The Houston guide credits low disposal fees for its lower prices.
- Distance. Jobs far from a hauler’s base can carry a mileage or fuel surcharge. The Denver guide notes it for mountain towns, and the San Luis Obispo guide for pickups outside the stretch of coast most crews cover.
For a firm number, text photos to two or three haulers. The Dallas guide explains how close a photo quote usually lands to the final price.
